Why we need to protect the Sierra Madres

A few days ago, the Philippines was hit by a super typhoon that was as big as a country. Its name was super typhoon Uwan.

The Sierra Madres mountain range blocked most of the storm in northern Luzon. I’m happy that it prevented millions of families from getting hurt. But I’m also worried about the illegal deforestation in the Sierra Madres. If this goes on, the animals that live there will be hurt and possibly, extinct.

Now why do we need those animals? Because this mountain range has ecosystems. Which means they also have food webs. if one of the species goes extinct, many others (including the ones with no other home) will go extinct as well. We also underestimate how animals play a role in our lives. The ones we eat. The ones who help the mangoes grow. The ones who we call our pets or the ones who bring joy to our lives. We need to protect these unique ecosystems. Who knows if we will regret what we’ve done to them in the future.
